Understanding BSCI, OEKO-TEX & GOTS Certifications for Buyers

For international buyers sourcing from Bangladesh, certification labels like BSCI, OEKO-TEX, and GOTS carry real weight — but many buyers, especially those sourcing for the first time, aren't entirely sure what each one actually verifies. Here's a practical breakdown.

BSCI — Business Social Compliance Initiative

BSCI audits focus on labor conditions: fair wages, working hours, workplace safety, and the absence of child or forced labor. It's a social compliance standard rather than a product-quality certification, and it's frequently required by European retailers as a baseline supplier requirement.

OEKO-TEX — Product Safety

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifies that a textile product has been tested for harmful substances and is safe for human use. This matters most for apparel sold to end consumers, particularly children's wear, where regulatory scrutiny on chemical residues is strictest.

GOTS — Global Organic Textile Standard

GOTS covers the entire organic textile supply chain — from organic fiber cultivation through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing. A product only qualifies as "GOTS certified" if the whole chain, not just the raw material, meets the standard.

How to Verify a Supplier's Certificates

  • Request the certificate number and cross-check it on the certifying body's public database
  • Confirm the certificate scope covers the specific factory and product category you're ordering
  • Check the certificate's expiry date — audits are typically renewed annually

Working with a sourcing partner who maintains active relationships with certified factories — and can produce documentation on request — significantly reduces compliance risk for your import program.
